Blue Sub Screens and Info

Legion (Former Staff) — July 13th, 2000 — 5:30 PM

Having been expected to air in the 11:00 AM slot on the Cartoon Network's Rising Sun starting back on July 8th, these plans for Blue Submarine No. 6 seemed to have changed at the last minute. TV Guide's listing for this slot shifted from Blue Sub to DBZ reruns not long before the scheduled air date, the rescheduling being confirmed on the 8th when Blue Sub was nowhere to be found.

Both the Cartoon Network and Bandai let the change go by with not so much as a word of explanation, but it's now been revealed from a reliable source within Bandai that Blue Submarine No. 6 is still on tap to be aired on the Cartoon Network, only at a later date. No specific date is available as of yet, but it's been said that the airing will take place at some point in October.

October is still a long way off though, so for those of you who haven't picked up the home video release of this show and are waiting for the TV broadcast, I've put together a collection of screen shot galleries to give you a taste of what's to come on Toonami. The first of seven galleries can be viewed here.

While I'm still undecided on how I feel about the plot of Blue Submarine No. 6, the second of four DVDs having arrived only yesterday, the show is unquestionably a visual treat. Heavy use of CG allows for some stunning special effects and camera work, ranging from simply spectacular imagery to the occasional jarring integration of CG and what appears to be standard cell-based art, although I suspect much of this was painted using computers as well. Additionally, the show being a recent release in Japan means the source master is very clean, leading to a terrific DVD transfer with very few digital artifacts, although it's also the reason for the show's slow release schedule as the Japanese DVDs must be released before their North American counterparts.

In any case, with seven galleries of high quality shots to browse through, you might as well get started right away and stop listening to my ramblings. Enjoy the screens and don't forgot to catch this high budget OVA on the Cartoon Network this coming October.
